Boo is a 5-year-old Dobie (or slightly mixed Dobie) who was taken to an animal shelter by his owners, so there is more information about him from one year old to his current age than we usually receive on shelter dogs. However, some of the information the owners provided doesn't closely resemble behaviors observed by shelter staff. This typically means shelter dogs are stressed and behave more offensively or defensively than they would in a home environment. For example, the owners said Boo was good with other dogs, even small ones, and that he was good with small children, moreso than with teenagers and men. The animal shelter people found Boo very strong and reactive (negatively) toward other dogs in their kennels and actually nipped the hands of two employees placing their hands within his reach from inside his kennel. Our experience in the short time we've had him (December, 2019) is that he's a highly excitable dog who will likely need to be in a home environment to be on his best behavior. He is very strong on leash and will need an able, experienced handler when walking outside his own territory. Boo had been an outside dog previously "except when it was cold."
