Devlin has been with us about a month (as of December, 2019), and we've learned more about him. He's about 5 years old, and initially we thought he was just a very serious dog who hadn't had a joyful enough life to display happiness. That is probably still true, but it appears Devlin may have also been forced to do things he feared or couldn't tolerate behaviorally. We placed with briefly with an adopter who viewed what she perceived to be aggressive behavior toward her and her passengers, though it isn't known what caused the behavior. Upon his return a couple of hours later, he displayed aggressive behavior when required to exit the car. The adopter offered to give us treats to motivate him, but we declined to "bribe" him into compliance, as dogs who have no reason to fear should not need to be bribed. When he was prompted to leave the car by our own (more confident) person, he complied and was back in his comfort zone, realizing that compliance was not optional and no discipline would follow. As a result of our observations, Devlin is available only to an experienced adult person or couple familiar with dominant breed dogs and fear-aggressive behavior. We think he is worthy and, if allowed time to decompress and develop trust with the new owner(s), he'll behave in a compliant manner as he has with us.
