Zeke is a dog we rescued from upstate California that was believed to have been intended for use as a guard dog. The animal shelter contacts said he was not treated well, and that the owners took a soft, underconfident dog and tried to make him more aggressive using some sort of threat over his head (he was still somewhat head-shy). Ultimately Zeke must have failed as a guard dog and was found by a citizen, who said that when someone Zeke didn't know approached his human, he nipped the stranger. The shelter staff determined that once Zeke knew their people and knew he wouldn't be harmed, he acted like a 6-month puppy, play-bowing and bonding quickly with them. He was at first fearful of other dogs and may still be so, at least until knowing he doesn't have to fear them. We think Zeke will make a great, protective companion for someone willing to build his confidence and make him trust humanity again. He's about 2 years old and weighs 67 pounds.
