Rasca is about 3 years old and was impounded with another dog (probably her brother) at an animal shelter that, thankfully, tests for the Von Willebrand clotting disease. This shelter does not generally spay or neuter Dobermans that aren't even at particular risk, but Rasca's factor was at 8%, extremely low, typically requiring a transfusion during surgery, or at least plasma. If we had not agreed to rescue Rasca, she would have been euthanized. She came through the surgery beautifully with only plasma administered and was back to her usual happy, active self a couple of days later, just ready to join in the fun and the day's activities.
